A celebration of heritage, community spirit and good old-fashioned fun was on full display over the weekend as the Historic Village Herberton welcomed over 1200 visitors for its annual Pioneer Weekend on 31 May – 1 June.
From hay wagon rides and working steam engines to woodturning and bush cooking, the Village buzzed with activity as visitors explored the many hands-on exhibits and live demonstrations.
The popular Fashions on the Field competition attracted more than 60 entries across the weekend, with participants donning period costumes for a chance at prizes in best-dressed categories for children, adults, couples and families.
Live music was a standout this year, with a full program of local talent entertaining crowds across both days.
Performers included the Jeanette Wormald Trio, Carinda Christie, Now or Never, Bella Cappella Choir, Tablelands Ukulele Group and Sligo.
Owners Craig and Connie Kimberley said the weekend continues to be a highlight on the Atherton Tablelands calendar.
“It is a joy to see so many people embracing the pioneering spirit. The effort that goes into the costumes, the enthusiasm of our volunteers and the engagement from the community make it a really special weekend,” Craig Kimberley said.
Demonstrations of vintage machinery including the 1916 John Deere Waterloo Boy, steam traction engines and the historic printing press drew steady crowds, while pony rides, children’s games, bush cooking and storytelling ensured there was plenty for families to enjoy.
The event also supported several local groups and charities, including the Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway, Lions Club, Red Cross and Herberton State School.
“Pioneer Weekend would not be possible without our volunteers. Their generosity and knowledge help bring history to life for our guests, and we are very grateful,” he added.
Pioneer Weekend is held annually at the Historic Village Herberton, a privately owned open-air museum showcasing one of Australia’s most extensive collections of early settler history.
