Self Drive
Chances are, you’re driving to us!
We have a large, accessible carpark directly in front of the Village which can easily accommodate recreational vehicles (caravans, motorhomes etc).
Follow the Kennedy Highway (1) to Atherton, then turn onto the Atherton-Herberton Road for 20 minutes.
Historic Village Herberton is located at 6 Broadway off Herberton Road — just north of Herberton town on the Atherton Tablelands.
We are:
• 15 minutes drive from Atherton
• 1hr 45mins from Port Douglas
• 4 hours from Townsville
• 90 minutes from Cairns
At approx 750m above sea level, the Atherton Tablelands climate is cooler and fresher than the coast. This makes it ideally suited for preserving the well aged buildings in the collection at Historic Village Herberton.

Suggested Day Itineraries
From Cairns
Leave Cairns and head up the Kuranda Range Road (15 minutes north of Cairns turnoff at Smithfield). If you are interested in museums, after an hour’s driving, stop at Atherton to check out the Crystal Caves (a wonderful mineralogical museum) or Atherton’s Chinatown (the Chinese were a major part of the Tablelands history).
20 minutes further from Atherton, you’ll enter the town of Herberton and the Village is on the left hand side at the entrance to the town. Explore the buildings and exhibits and enjoy refreshments at the Bakerville Tearooms.
The Village’s Bakerville Tearooms are open during high season.
Enjoy tea, coffee, sandwiches, cakes and other delights.
You are also welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy one of the many lovely spots available to sit and relax.
Allow three hours time.
Before you leave the pretty town of Herberton, visit The Herberton Mining and Visitor Information Centre which has an excellent interpretation of the region’s mining history, among other exhibits there.
Driving back, you can retrace your steps through Atherton, Kuranda and down the hill, or you can drive from Atherton to Yungaburra and drive down the Gillies Range back to Cairns via Edmonton).
From Port Douglas
Drive south along the Captain Cook Highway beside the Coral Sea and enjoy the views! It will take you about 45 minutes to reach Smithfield, where you turn up the Kuranda Range Road and follow the options above. Have a break in delightful Kuranda to stretch your legs and get some refreshments (the icecream’s recommended!).
Or, you could head north to Mossman, and take the Rex Range turn off before the township and continue to Mt Molloy, then south along the Peninsula Development Road to reach Mareeba in about an hour. Follow the signs from Mareeba to Atherton. There’s an interesting museum also on the main road into Tolga opposite the Tolga Woodwork Gallery.
From Townsville
On an average day it will take you four hours to drive to the Village. Break the journey at Cardwell, and stop by the sea for refreshments. The Palmerston Highway is an excellent road, and is accessible both north and south of Innisfail.
At the top of the range is the township of Millaa Millaa, famous for the beautiful bridal drop waterfall (look out for the Waterfall Circuit signs). Follow the road signs to Herberton via Wondecla.
